The Family Unit route allows foreigners to obtain Temporary or Permanent Resident status based on family ties to a Mexican citizen or resident. Spouses and minor children of Mexican citizens can reach Permanent Resident after 2 years of Temporary Residency; spouses of foreign Temporary Residents typically match the sponsor's status.

Application steps

    Get apostille in issuing country, translate to Spanish by a certified translator if needed.

    At consulate in country of residence.

  3. 3. Consular appointment

    Submit all documents with the Mexican relative's ID copies. Pay USD 54.

  4. 4. Receive entry visa

    Valid 180 days.

  5. 5. Enter Mexico

    Request canje on FMM.

  6. 6. Canje at INM

    Schedule appointment within 30 days. Exchange for resident card. Pay card fee.
