Temporary Resident VisaRT
The Temporary Resident Visa allows foreigners to live in Mexico for 1 to 4 years, renewable. It is the main pathway for expats and must initially be applied for at a Mexican consulate OUTSIDE Mexico. Three main qualification routes: financial solvency, job offer, or family ties. Since July 2025, Mexican consulates calculate financial solvency based on UMA (Unidad de Medida y Actualizacion), which in 2026 is MXN 117.31 per day. Typical 2026 thresholds: approximately USD 2,000-2,500 per month in income (6 months history) or USD 70,000-75,000 in average savings/investments (12 months history). Frequently asked questions
How much income do I need for Mexico Temporary Residency in 2026?
Approximately USD 2,000-2,500 per month in net income for the past 6 months (about 300x daily UMA). Exact figures depend on exchange rate at application time and on the specific consulate. Pensions, investment income and business income all qualify.
How much in savings do I need instead of income?
Approximately USD 70,000-75,000 as an average balance over the last 12 months (about 5,000x daily UMA). Consulates accept a mix of bank savings, investment accounts, retirement accounts (401k, IRA), trusts and bonds. Volatile balances may be questioned.
Can my spouse and kids get residency with me?
Yes. Spouses and minor children qualify for the Family Unit route once you are Temporary Resident. Typically the primary applicant enters Mexico first, obtains the residency card, and then sponsors the family through INM from inside Mexico.
How do I renew my Mexico Temporary Resident Card?
Renew at INM before the card expires. You can request a 1-year, 2-year or 3-year extension within the 4-year total limit. Renewals do NOT require another consular visa or proof of financial solvency - they are administrative.
