Brazil CPF for Foreigners 2026: The Three Ways to Get It (Even From Abroad)

Last verified: May 22, 2026

CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Fisicas) is the Brazilian taxpayer ID required for almost every meaningful transaction: opening a bank account, buying property, signing a phone contract, even buying expensive electronics. Foreigners can get it from abroad, at a Brazilian consulate, or in-country at Receita Federal. Each path has tradeoffs.

Key takeaway

You can get a CPF without ever entering Brazil through the Receita Federal online portal or via Brazilian consulates, often within 1-2 weeks. In-country application takes 24 hours at a Receita Federal office. CPF does NOT make you a Brazilian tax resident; that is a separate test. Start the CPF before arrival to skip a week of friction.

CPF is the Brazilian equivalent of a Social Security Number for tax purposes plus a national ID number for civil transactions. Every adult Brazilian citizen has one; foreigners need one for almost everything beyond tourism. Importantly, holding a CPF is a tax administrative event, not a tax residency declaration.

What CPF unlocks

  • Opening any Brazilian bank or fintech account (Itau, Bradesco, Nubank, Inter, C6)
  • Buying property in your own name
  • Signing a residential lease over R$ 1,000/month (most landlords require it)
  • Buying a SIM card from any of the four carriers
  • Buying expensive electronics, vehicles or appliances (cashier asks for CPF for warranty registration)
  • Booking domestic flights at non-foreign prices (some apps treat foreigner without CPF differently)
  • Health plan enrollment with Unimed, Bradesco Saude, Amil
  • Registering as a freelancer (MEI) or business owner

Three paths to CPF

CPF acquisition paths for foreigners (2026)
PathBest for
Online from abroad (Receita Federal portal)OnlineForeigners planning a long stay, want it before arrival. Takes 1-2 weeks. Requires accessible PDF documents.
Brazilian consulate (in your home country)ConsulateSame general timeline, slightly more paperwork-heavy but consulate verifies documents in person.
In-country at Receita Federal officeCAC officeFastest. Walk into any Receita Federal post with passport, get the CPF same day in many cases.

Path 1: Online from abroad

Receita Federal's online CPF application portal accepts foreign applicants. You upload a passport scan, fill in identity details (date of birth, mother's maiden name, gender, nationality), and submit. Within 1-2 weeks, you receive an email with your CPF number. The physical card is no longer issued; the number alone is the credential.

Practical catches: the form is Portuguese-only; use a translator or browser plugin. Some fields require Brazilian address format; you can use a hotel or AirBnB address temporarily, or leave blank if the form allows. The portal occasionally rejects applications without explanation; resubmit with cleaner passport scan or different browser if the first attempt fails.

Path 2: Brazilian consulate

Every Brazilian consulate accepts CPF applications. You book an appointment (online via the consulate's booking system), arrive with passport plus a completed paper form, pay a small administrative fee (typically free or USD 5-15 depending on consulate), and receive the CPF number by email within 1-3 weeks. Consulates in Miami, New York, DC, Houston, LA, Toronto, London, Lisbon and Madrid are well-established for this service.

Path 3: In-country at Receita Federal

Once in Brazil, walk into any Receita Federal Centro de Atendimento ao Cidadao (CAC) with your passport. Some CACs accept walk-ins; others require an online appointment booked at the gov.br portal. Most centers process CPF applications in 30-60 minutes; you walk out with the number on a printed receipt. Total cost: typically free for first-time issuance.

What CPF does NOT mean

  • It does NOT make you a Brazilian tax resident. Tax residency triggers separately at 184 days of presence.
  • It does NOT give you any right to work in Brazil. That requires the appropriate visa.
  • It does NOT obligate you to file Brazilian tax returns. Filing depends on tax residency, not on holding a CPF.
  • It does NOT expire. Once issued, your CPF stays with you for life regardless of where you live.
  • It does NOT change your legal immigration status. CPF is administrative, not migratory.

Common mistakes

  1. Misspelling your name to match passport. The Portuguese form asks for nome completo (full name); use exactly what appears on your passport, including middle names. Mismatches block bank account openings later.
  2. Listing a US ZIP code in the address field. The portal expects a Brazilian CEP; leave blank or use a temporary Brazilian address.
  3. Applying with both passport and another ID and getting them mismatched. Use one document throughout.
  4. Forgetting that CPF is permanent. If you applied 10 years ago and forgot the number, you do NOT apply again; you recover it via the Receita portal.
  5. Trying to obtain a CPF for a child under 16 online. Minor CPF requires both parents present at the consulate or CAC.

CPF for children, spouses and businesses

Children of any age can hold a CPF. Brazilian-born children receive CPF automatically at birth registration. Foreign-born minors entering with parents on derivative visas obtain CPF via consulate or CAC with both parents present. Spouses obtain CPF independently; no joint CPF exists. Businesses use CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Juridica), the corporate equivalent, which is a separate registration.

Frequently asked questions

Is CPF really required to do anything in Brazil?

For meaningful transactions, yes. Without CPF you can pay cash for groceries and restaurants, ride Uber, and stay in hotels. Anything involving registration, contracts, banking, real estate or large purchases will ask for CPF. Even buying a SIM card from Vivo, TIM or Claro requires it. Plan to get the CPF before or immediately on arrival.

Can I get a CPF on a tourist visa?

Yes. Tourist status does not block CPF. Many foreigners obtain CPF before any residency application precisely because the residency process requires the CPF to be quoted in lease contracts and bank documents that support the file.

How long does CPF take from a US consulate?

Roughly 1-3 weeks depending on consulate workload. Miami and NYC tend toward the faster end; Houston and LA can be longer. Booking the appointment is usually the bottleneck (1-4 weeks waiting for an available slot), not the processing itself.

Does CPF expose me to Brazilian tax obligations?

Only when combined with tax residency. CPF is purely administrative. Receita Federal does not deem you taxable just because you hold a CPF. Tax obligations follow your residency status: under 184 days/year and you remain a non-resident for income tax purposes, with only Brazil-source income taxed.

I lost my CPF number. How do I recover it?

Use the Receita Federal portal's "consulta de CPF" feature with your full name, date of birth and mother's maiden name. The system returns your CPF number immediately. No new application is needed; CPF is permanent and issued only once per person.
